Through The Fire

The noise was
d e a f e n I n g.
A roar shook my bones,
and wind screamed
in response,
the blue and white flames
growing taller.
An eternity felt with each passing
tick
tock
from the clock on the wall.
The heat stole my breath
as I watched the wall seem to bend
for a second
like a desert mirage
before falling to its death
The sizzling and popping
barely making an
impression on me
I struggled to see further
through the smoke
that wrapped around me
Death by hug
Squeezing each molecule
that had any strength left
until it begged for mercy
but found none
And there I was.
World falling down around me
Fire scorching everything
I touched
Every thought I had, come undone
But then you appeared,
crawling along the floor,
face blackened from
smoke and soot.
You grabbed my leg
and I fell as swiftly as
the wall
the world
No mercy
until your hand reached over
and brushed against mine
and I saw clearly
for one second
you were safety.
My arms and legs were rubber,
but somehow
I crawled behind you
unsure which way to go
trusting you remembered
the way out
the clock had stopped
counting eternities
as I pulled my body
closer to yours,
knees bloody from
broken glass,
following your lead
through fire and damnation
until we emerged from
the fallen house
into the shelter
of the velvety night sky.
As my hands touched yours,
I knew
I was finally home.

Dedicated to my husband, who meets me in the middle of my depression and helps me find better days.
