The Life Sentence

What have I done?
Heart plummeting to the
rocky bottom of the
Grand Canyon.
I screwed up
beyond repair.
That ringing in my ears,
full-blown tinnitus,
jarring against
the scream piercing
my ear drums,
heard by no one
but me.
Fluttering,
dizzy
waves submerge me.
Pounding
felt in my chest
as I face the past
and crash
to my knees,
chasing a breath
lost to the horizon
of gold giving way to
reds, pinks, purples
before black covers all
in a life sentence
of regret.
