The Absence of Light
Shadows can't exist without light,
So where is the light?
I sense the shadows all around me,
Threatening me, solid as a fist
Beating me until
I am bruised, broken,
Stumbling in the dark,
Trying to find my breath.
But the absence of light
Blocks my every move,
And my search fails.
My strength to face this darkness
Stutters,
As visions of gut wrenching loss
Blind me
To the sight of hope.
I strike a match, and
Light flickers, then is blown out
By the type of bone-chilling wind
That only exists
In the darkest of storms.
Thick drops of worry
Fall on the ground around me,
Threatening to drown me,
And booms of terror
Explode directly over me.
But then...
A bright flash in the black sky
Lights up my world for
Just a second and I see
Everything.
The shadows have no substance,
Thriving in life's questions.
But the truth's intense light
Can dissipate them...
So I'm praying for lightning to strike.
